Sarah van der Kemp – Bio (en)

Sarah van der Kemp is a freelance singer since 2010 season. In addition to engagements at the Staatstheater Schwerin (BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE / Judith; and others) she debuted with the concertante part of Sieglinde / WALKÜRE (China, Shenzhen SSO), and was additionally invited to sing CARMEN at the New Years concert 2011. She performed Hänsel / HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, conducted by Sebastian Weigle with the Dresdener Philharmonie, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin employed her to sing Jane in theresumption of GERMANIA.

Sarah was also active in the concert field, focussing especially on the orchestral Lied. She sang Mahler’s LIEDER EINES FAHRENDEN GESELLEN (China, Philharmonie Berlin), and the alto in KLAGENDES LIED, as well as orchestral songs of Duparc and the concert aria DER WEIN of Alban Berg. In December 2011 she sang for the first time the alto of Verdi’s Requiem in Paris (Chatédrale des Invalides). This season she will interpret RÜCKERT LIEDER by Mahler in Lyon and Berlin.

Opernwelt praised Sarah van der Kemp’s interpretation of Preziosilla / FORZA DEL DESTINO at the Schweriner Festspiele 2010, stating: „vocally the supporting roles are the most convincing: Sarah van der Kemp puts on a great performance as gypsy Preziosilla and moves competently between all registers.“ The SVZ stated that „Sarah van der Kemp was an eyecatcher as the Gypsy Preziosilla and her voice glowed with incredible brilliance up to the crystal clear highest notes.“

She had been engaged by the Staatstheater Schwerin as a full-time ensemble member since the 2007/2008 season, which enabled her to perform important parts as Judith / HERZOG BLAUBARTS BURG, Rosina / BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, Sesto / CESARE, Hänsel / HÄNSEL UND GRETEL amongst others.

Before that she was engaged for two years at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where she was as a scholarship holder. Among others she played Hänsel / HÄNSEL AND GRETEL, Lucienne / THE DEAD CITY, 2nd Lady / MAGIC FLUTE, Roßweiße / WALKÜRE, Mercédès / CARMEN, Alt / MATTHÄUSPASSION, Infermiera/SUOR ANGELICA; Flora LA TRAVIATA.

Further roles played at other opera productions are part of her repertoire: Composer / ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, Carmen / CARMEN, Eboli / DON CARLO (Concert tour), Rosina / BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA, Concepción / L’HEURE ESPAGNOLE, Sesto / LA CLEMENZA DI TITO, Sesto / CESARE, Ottavia / L’INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA (“Academia d’Amore“; Steven Stubbs, Bremen).

She was working with conductors like Donald Runnicles, Sebastian Weigle, Yves Abel, Michael Gielen, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Matthias Foremny und anderen zusammen. Her engagements have taken her to Peru, Bolivia, Italy, Switzerland and France (Festival Avignon and Festival Radio France, Montpellier).

Sarah van der Kemp was born in Berlin and began her musical studies in the fields of piano and musicology at Berlin’s University of the Arts. She continued with a post-graduate vocal diploma at the „Hanns Eisler” conservatoire (Berlin), studying with Julia Varady. During her studies she was also a scholarship holder for the Wagner Society. Even before finishing her studies she made her debut at the Staatsoper Berlin as the Woman Artist / LULU under the direction of Michael Gielen. She participated in masterclasses with Thomas Quasthoff and Peter Konwitschny; and worked with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Berlin, Stuttgart, Schwarzenberg), focussing in particular on Mahler’s orchestra-Lieder.
